Lay Bet
A lay bet is the opposite of a buy: you bet a 7 comes before a given number, siding with the house. It pays true odds minus a 5% commission, so you risk more than you win. On the 4 and 10 the edge on the amount you put up is 1.67%, making it the wrong bettor's version of the buy.
1.67% to 2.27% edge on the amount laid, a solid dark-side bet.

How to place it
Hand chips to the dealer and say 'lay the 4' or 'lay the 10.' You bet the 7 rolls before the number, and pay a 5% commission on the win.
Also called: lay the 4, lay the 10, lay against.
Frequently asked questions
How does a lay bet win?
It wins when a 7 rolls before the number you laid. Since the 7 is the most common roll, the lay bet is often a favorite, which is why it pays less than even money on these numbers.
What does a lay bet cost?
A 5% commission, usually charged on the amount you would win rather than the amount you risk. On the 4 and 10 that leaves a 1.67% edge relative to the money you lay.
Is a lay bet a good bet?
It is one of the better dark-side bets, in the same low-edge range as buying. It ties up more cash than the payout returns, so it needs a larger bankroll to play comfortably.
